Time Management During Your Job Search

Good time management is something that is crucial if you want to be effective in your work, but it’s also incredibly important when you are looking for a job. Today’s job market is competitive, which means that there are likely to be hundreds of people applying for the same position as you at any given time. You have to be aware of that and put yourself in a position to succeed from the very moment you fill out that first application. The best way to do that is to think of your search as a job in itself, and as we have already stated, that means managing your time effectively. Let’s look at a few time-related traps that job seekers often seem to fall into.

One of the biggest time issues that the out of work face is procrastination. That doesn’t mean that they necessarily put off the task of looking for work, but rather they get caught up in other things while they look. This is something that can easily happen, no matter what job search tactic you employ. If you go the online job search route, the lure of social media sites is often enough to lead you astray. There are distractions of a different sort for those that choose to pound the pavement in search of work. You have to set definite times of the day aside to look for work and stick to that.

We all imagine having that dream job that pays really well and that we would just love to go to ever day. The fact that we don’t have the qualifications to land such a job seldom if ever enters into the thought process. It’s okay to chase your dreams, but if your whole time is spent applying to jobs that you aren’t qualified for, you will be letting perfectly good positions pass you by in the process. By all means, apply for a dream job or two, but don’t waste your time doing nothing but that.

It’s important to have a resume and cover letter that catches the eye of potential employees, but you can take the quest to create that a little too far. If you find that you are spending a great deal of time tinkering with and tweaking your resume, then you have to recognize that you are trying to be too perfect. Your work experience, education, and skill sets will speak for themselves in your resume, no matter how you choose to word or frame them.

When you start your job search, you should have an idea of what it is you are looking to achieve. You have to know which career path it is that you want to follow, otherwise you will do nothing but create several different paths that will simply pull you in different directions. Losing focus on what it is you really want means that you will just waste time chasing a position that will leave you feeling unfulfilled at the end of the day.
