How to Act Like a CEO

If you’re looking for career advice you don’t need to go to a career coach, you just need to look at the way Steve Jobs managed his business and you’ll have all the advice you ever need. He is my all-time favorite CEO. He turned around a near bankrupt company and made it the most valuable company in the world. The fact is, he was an incredibly talented man and a visionary but we all have the ability to be and do the same if we put our minds to it.  To that end here are a few tips that will lead you in the right direction.

If there was one thing that Steve Jobs had it was the ability to visualize what he wanted.  Visualizing can make things more ‘real’ and make them easier to bring to reality, even on a large scale.  If you can create a vision of what you’d like to do, who you’d like to be or where you’d like your career to go you will be on your way before you know it. One thing you can do is to write your resume as if 5 years have passed. What do you want your resume to look like 5 years from now? By putting your vision down on paper, you will greatly increase your chance of achieving it.

Like a sailor you’ll need to set a course and chart your way if you want to make it to the next ‘port’, the port of success. Setting long and short-term goals is vital if you want to accomplish this.  These smaller goals will help your vision to materialize and, if you keep track of them, will help you reach whatever your main goal is in your work life. Daily, weekly, and monthly goals are excellent, as well as 1 year, 5 year and 10 year goals. Goals without a deadline or just wishes.

Make your goals realistic.  What you want to do is strike a balance between setting unrealistic goals and easily reached goals.  Make them big enough so that you feel that it will stretch your comfort zone to achieve it. Having goals will keep you motivated and excited.

Never stop learning.  The simple fact is, younger people will always be coming into your work with newer ideas and newer ways of doing business.  If you don’t want to be ‘outdated’ you need to keep up on the latest news, trends and outlook.  If not you will literally force yourself out of your own career because you become stagnant. More and more businesses are offering courses to enhance your career so take advantage of them  if you can.

To that same end, if there are opportunities at your workplace to expand your horizons,  skills that you need to improve or even an opportunity to take on more responsibility you should always take them.

Here, in no particular order, are a few other Tips that would make Mr. Jobs proud.

  • Get feedback about your performance whenever you can and from whomever you can.
  • Stay on top of the latest technologies.
  • Know your market inside and out.
  • Learn from people who are more successful  than you.
  • Become an innovator.  Take what’s being done and do it differently.

If you can do these things, and more if possible, you will be sure to end the game as a winner and have the career that you deserve.
